Frequently Asked Questions
What does a "Typical Class" consist of?

Systema classes generally follow the same structure from class to class. The first half hour is devoted to improving and strengthening our bodies and preparing ourselves for the evening's work. We warm up using gentle, dynamic stretching and movement exercises, followed by breathing work, and finally simple calisthenics.

The remainder of the session is devoted to "the work". Each lesson will have its own unique theme and approach, and will focus on a specific topic of self defence.

How is Systema different to other Martial Arts?

Unlike other Martial Arts, Systema does not have any katas or memorised patterns. Everything practiced has an emphasis on practicality and realism, with no set choreographed sequences.

In every class you learn how to relax, and how to do so when faced with physical and/or psychological stress. All exercises are designed to give you an appropriate and relative amount of strength, flexibility, and endurance, in addition to a high level of awareness and confidence. The emphasis is always on breathing, continuity, economy of motion, and subtle movements that produce powerful, unpredictable, and devastating defences, attacks, and counter-attacks.

Are there beginner / advanced classes?

Because there is no grading system in Systema, beginners and advanced students (as well as everyone in between) practice and learn together in a relaxed, cooperative, and supportive training environment.

How many classes should I attend per week?

This really depends on your personal circumstances, goals, and interest in Systema. We prefer to have a relaxed atmosphere, so if you can make it, great. If not, there's always next time.

How long before I can start to defend myself?

Systema is designed to give practitioners immediate, valuable, and functional self-defence skills from their very first session.

That much said, progress is different for each individual, and it may take as long as 6 months before an average person may feel that they can calmly, confidently, and successfully defend themselves against a certain number of threats.

I have a medical / physical condition. Can I still train?

Systema training is challenging both physically and psychologically. However, emphasis is always placed on helping each other to learn and grow. Safety is of paramount importance, and each session builds in an appropriate manner so that the student may adjust to the topic at hand.

Whilst certain exercises may appear rough and/or dangerous, nobody is ever forced to do anything they don't want to do. Each individual may participate according to his or her individual needs and circumstances.

If you have an existing medical / physical condition, please consult your doctor or local healthcare professional before commencing training with us.

Can I come and just watch a class?

The methods of Systema training are very different from traditional martial art approaches. Whilst you are more than welcome to watch a class, we'd like to encourage you to participate. Systema, like life, needs to be experienced, not observed. If there are drills you are not comfortable doing, you can sit them out, but if you are sufficiently curious to come and see us, please wear something comfortable and have a go!

New participants are always welcome and the first class is free!
